Can Premature Ejaculation Be Cured Medically?

Mar 17, 2018 Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common condition most men experience in their lifetime.  The definition of premature ejaculation is coming within 90 minutes of having sexual intercourse. Most of the time it is a one-off event and normal sexual performance resumes. There are two types of premature ejaculation Lifelong and Acquired. Some men have PE symptoms but they are not severe enough for them to seek treatment. Lifelong PE begins in adolescence and occurs every time you have sex. The main causes are; an oversensitive penis, anxiety about sex and bad sexual experiences.  Acquired PE occurs unexpectedly after years and is generally a one-off occurrence. Causes include; stress, a new relationship, or physical illness. Treatment involves delaying orgasms with exercises and antidepressants. It takes time to treat premature ejaculation because it involves changing the way you approach sex.  Relationships suffer because it adds tension and disappointment. Luckily practice makes perfect making overcoming the condition enjoyable for couples.

What Is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation is orgasming too early during sexual intercourse.  Doctors define it as coming within 90 minutes of intercourse but it is purely subjective. Men who believe their sex sessions end too quickly may also seek help.  Being unable to have satisfactory sex is a big strain on relationships because it causes bad feeling and disappointment. The two types of premature ejaculation occur at different times in your life.  Lifelong PE occurs from the teenage years and continues through adulthood. Acquired PE occurs later in life after a normal satisfying sex life.  Causes of PE vary from anxiety to medical conditions such as prostate disease. It is best to visit your doctor to determine the cause and arrange the best course of treatment.

What Causes It?

Primary or lifelong premature ejaculation starts in adolescence and continues throughout your adult life. Men who have this type of PE will have never had a satisfying sex life until they seek treatment.  This type of PE is very complex because it involves changing learned behaviours and changing attitudes to sex. As well as psychological causes it is possibly an inherited condition. Acquired premature ejaculation happens unexpectedly after many years of satisfactory sex. Life changes such as excitement about a new relationship are triggers. There is no cause for concern if it is just a one-off occurrence.  Repeated premature ejaculation could indicate an underlying health condition. Psychological causes include; negative early sexual experience, sexual abuse, being self-conscious, low moods and guilty attitudes towards sex.  Impotence, stress and unhappy relationships are also contributing factors to premature ejaculation. Fluctuating hormone levels, neurological problems, prostate or urethra infections and genetic traits.

Treatments

There are a variety of different treatments that improve the length of time it takes to ejaculate.  Some require medication while others involve stopping yourself from coming and taking control of your orgasm.  Non-medical treatments include; masturbating an hour before sexual intercourse, wearing a condom and anaesthetic creams.  Delaying orgasms by using the stop-start or squeeze method increases the length of intercourse. Relationship counselling helps to alleviate any problems contributing to premature ejaculation.  Antidepressants such as Priligy help to delay orgasms by reducing anxiety and taking away the urgency to come.  If premature ejaculation upsets or concerns you make an appointment with your doctor to get the treatment you require.   To review or purchase treatment for premature ejaculation please click here.
