Why should sunscreen be a part of your everyday skincare routine? We’re in the UK. Surely all that is needed is to slap some suncream on when going outside on the hottest of days? Wrong. Including sun protection into your daily routine is the best way to guard against premature ageing and health concerns, even when it is cooler and overcast.
Sun care is about protecting the skin from harmful UV, not just from burning. This is why many moisturisers and acnecides include an element of SPF sun protection. That said, yes -When the sun is out and it’s BBQ season it does pay to ramp up your sunscreen efforts.
Protecting your skin from suncare is not simply about stopping sunburn. Exposure to the sun can, over time, contribute to the risk of skin cancer. The flip side of this is that you can reduce your risk of skincare and pre-cancerous issues if you take steps to use sunscreen and be sun safe.
Applying sunscreen regularly that has a minimum SPF level of 15 is known to cut melanoma risks by 50% and SCC (Squamous Cell Carcinoma) by as much as 40%. (Source: https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/skin-cancer-facts/). When you look at it that way, there’s no good reason not to incorporate effective sun care into your daily skincare routine and to take extra care during sunny periods and when travelling.
You can find more about sun care and skin cancer prevention on the skincancer.org website.
Again, wearing suncream is not just for reducing the risk of burning. It also helps to reduce premature ageing. This can include age spots, wrinkles and more. The sun, while fun when in all its glory, can be directly responsible for damaging the skin. Moisturising creams with SPF sun protection and after sun products are an important part of keeping your skin in tip-top condition.
Everyone should be using sunscreen to protect their skin from damage. Provided children are over six months of age (their skin is sensitive so under that age covering up and avoiding sunlight is the primary advice) they can and should be wearing sunscreen. Men and women, young and older, everyone should find a sun care product that maximises their protection levels.
Black Girl Sunscreen, a range of suncare products produced by black women is proving to be incredibly popular, especially the Make it Glow SPF30 sunscreen spray.
With a great range of products for everyone, including different types, i.e. sprays, creams, roll-ons, balms and more, it has never been easier to make suncare a proactive and positive part of your daily skincare regime.
Did you know that Aloe Vera is something of a super ingredient? It is commonly known to ease sunburn and bumps but it also protects and moisturises, as well as boasting anti-ageing properties. A product such as the Fruits of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel is a suncare staple in many homes and several suncreams and sun protection products include aloe vera, such as some of the Nivea range.
When applying your suncare products remember to cover all exposed areas. Face, nose, arms, your neck, we usually remember this. What about your feet though? Those outside in bare feet or when wearing flip-flops or sandals are the ones running the risk of catching the sun in delicate areas.
If you have thinning or no hair on your head, apply sunscreen. Wearing a hat can be advantageous too, particularly if you have a wide-brimmed one which can shield your face and neck as well as cover your head. And, don’t forget your lips. The Sun Sense Lip Balm offers SPF50-level protection, as well as boasting significant moisturising properties. With four hours of water resistance too, it’s a great one to have in your bag for the beach or the pool.
Make sure that you prioritise sun care as part of your daily skincare routine, protecting yourself from ageing sun damage as well as lessening your risk of skin cancers. There are numerous excellent products available that make incorporating sun care easy. On-the-go products mean that having top-up sunscreen with you wherever you go is no longer an inconvenience and with a product available for all needs, effective suncare is easy to access. Make sure you are prioritising healthy skin throughout the seasons.
