FAQs

What is benzydamine hydrochloride spray and what is it used for?

Benzydamine hydrochloride is a locally acting treatment used to provide fast relief from pain and inflammation in the mouth and throat. It is the generic version of the popular brand Difflam, containing the exact same active medicine to treat soreness and swelling.

How does benzydamine spray work to relieve mouth and throat pain?

Benzydamine works in two ways: it acts as an anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling and redness, and it provides a mild local anaesthetic (numbing) effect. This dual action targets the source of the pain while providing a soothing sensation to the affected area.

How quickly does benzydamine spray work and how often can you use it?

Benzydamine spray begins to work almost immediately upon contact with the throat or mouth. For ongoing relief, it is typically used every 1.5 to 3 hours, or as directed by the label. Always follow the dosage instructions provided with your specific spray to ensure safe use.

Can you use benzydamine spray for a sore throat or mouth ulcers?

Yes. Benzydamine is highly effective for various conditions, including sore throats, painful mouth ulcers, and teething/gum pain. It is also frequently used to soothe irritation caused by dental work or discomfort from wearing dentures.

Is benzydamine spray the same as Difflam?

Yes. Benzydamine hydrochloride is the active medical ingredient found in Difflam. While the packaging and branding may look different, the generic version is medically equivalent, offering the same level of pain relief and anti-inflammatory action at a more cost-effective price.

Who should not use benzydamine hydrochloride spray?

Most adults and children can use the spray safely, but you should avoid it if you have a known allergy to benzydamine. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor or pharmacist before use. If your symptoms persist for more than a few days or are accompanied by a high fever, seek medical advice.
