Having a cold can be tough. Between the coughing and sneezing, the sore throat and, of course, the stuffed-up feeling, it really isn’t fun. While some people choose to simply ride a cold out, others might reach for medications and other remedies to help them through it. It can, however, be more difficult to find ‘grab and go’ cold treatments when you are vegan.
Vegans do not consume anything that comes from animal sources. This includes meat, fish, dairy, eggs, fats and more. In addition to this vegans do not use products that are animal-derived, for example, leather.
The Vegan Society has been operational for 78 years now. They spearheaded National Vegan Day on their 50th anniversary which became National Vegan Week and now National Vegan Month. Their website has an immense amount of information on veganism, including a more detailed description of what veganism is, and isn’t.
We've highlighted in a previous blog post here - What Makes a Product Vegan Friendly with examples of logos you may see on packaging.
Honey is a popular ingredient in cold and flu remedies as honey is known to have natural healing properties and is a great ingredient for soothing the throat. There are issues around honey and veganism for some people though. Let us explain. There are two trains of thought. While some vegans are happy to accept honey as it is not made from an animal in the same way meat or dairy is, others are not.
The important thing to remember is that neither opinion is wrong. Being vegan is about making choices and here at SimplyMedsOnline, we respect that.
According to The Vegan Society, all UK medications are currently tested on animals before they can be approved for human use. They do not recommend that anyone avoid medication that has been prescribed by a doctor. Fortunately, when it comes to colds and many other non-prescribed medications there are often vegan-friendly alternatives.
When it comes to combatting colds when you are vegan, we have a number of new products to help with the upcoming winter months. These include:
Floradix is a popular plant-based product including herbal extracts such as echinacea and a mixture of fruity juice concentrates. This immune system-boosting product is packed with vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin D3, Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, Selenium and Zinc. This is great for cold recovery and for building you up throughout the year to help you stay as healthy as possible.
Bronchostop cough syrup contains marshmallow root extract and thyme extract, making this traditional herbal vegan cough syrup suitable for all types of coughs. Cough syrups can soothe the throat and generally make having a cold and cough a little easier to wait out.
Much loved and recognised by many, Olbas Oil, an inhalant decongestant is used to offer relief from colds, blocked noses/sinuses and from catarrh. Olbas Oil contains no animal products, is cruelty-free and is made up of pure plant oils including eucalyptus, making this a vegan-friendly option for cold relief.
Here at Simply Meds Online, we have a range of vegan products and actively keep our collective eyes open for new alternatives. We do this because it is important for everyone to be able to live their chosen lifestyle and enjoy the benefits of medical support when needed.
