Sumatriptan is used to treat cluster headaches and migraines, though it's important to note that it does not prevent these headaches from occurring. Sumatriptan can be kept in your medicine cabinet ready for as soon as your migraine starts.

It is available as an injection, nasal spray and tablet. The tablet is suitable for migraines only, while the injection and nasal spray can be used for cluster headaches and migraines. The medication should be taken as soon as the headache starts and it should start working with an hour. The nasal spray and injection do work faster and are also better for patients that experience nausea and vomiting with their migraines.

Can I Take Sumatriptan?

Most adults that experience migraines have sumatriptan tablets as they are the most cost effective way to use the treatment with the nasal spray providing a non-invasive way of taking the treatment without swallowing it. This medication is not approved for children, though if your child is seeing a specialist, it is possible that children over the age of six be prescribed Sumatriptan.

You may not be able to take this medication if you have had allergic reaction to this type of medication in the past or you have a heart problem.

Anyone with circulatory issues and anyone who has had a stroke, liver problems or seizures are not suited to take Sumatriptan. It should not be taken if you are trying to get pregnant, you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you are a heavy smoker or using nicotine replacement therapy.

Further if you have high blood sugar, it must be in a well-controlled state before you can consider using this migraine relief tablet.

How to Take It

Ensure you follow your prescribers instructions to the letter. Your first dose should be taken as soon as the migraine starts. It must not be taken at the warming stage or before the migraine starts, but only when you start experiencing pain or aura.

Tablets should be taken whole with a glass of water. Tablets can take thirty to sixty minutes to start taking effect. You should not take more tablets for the same migraine attack, only if the migraine improves and then returns can you take a second dose after two full hours.

The nasal spray is prescribed for migraines and cluster headaches and the spray contains a 10mg or 20mg dose of sumatriptan. You will want to blow your nose before you start and then place a finger over one of the nostrils.

Spray the medication into the other nostril and breath in gently. This spray should work within fifteen minutes with the ability to have a second dose after two hours for a migraine which eases and then gets bad again. A second dose must not be done on the same migraine attack.
