Who Can Prescribe Norethisterone?

Feb 27, 2018 Period Delay

Norethisterone effectively delays periods for short lengths of time.  Regular periods are a sign of good health but sometimes cause inconvenience. Women delay periods for special events in their lives such as; holidays, weddings, activity days and pilgrimages. Any method of period delay alters the way female hormones work in the body. Women who use the contraceptive pill easily delay periods by taking one packet immediately after another.  Natural methods have varying degrees of success and are unreliable so a hormone-based treatment is necessary.  Norethisterone is a progestogen that mimics the production of progesterone in the body. Period delay treatment is not a contraception and does not prevent pregnancy.  Delaying periods should be a temporary arrangement and not taken continuously.  Your doctor will check your health and suitability before prescribing Norethisterone.  You must take Norethisterone as instructed so that it is most effective.

Why Delay Periods?

A regular monthly period is a sign of good health and indicates that your body is working correctly.  Most women welcome their period but sometimes they are inconvenient and spoil important events.  The main reasons women delay periods are; their wedding day, honeymoon, dream holiday, sporting events and religious pilgrimages.   Periods require sanitary protection which needs changing and disposal.  It would just be your luck if your period leaked all over your wedding dress. Traipsing through the jungle looking for somewhere to change your tampon takes the shine off your trip of a lifetime.  Imagine doing the Great North Swim and having to worry about leaking in your wetsuit.   Some women need to delay their periods for medical reasons such as endometriosis, painful heavy periods and unexpected bleeding.  They will take Norethisterone for longer periods of time under the guidance of their doctor.  Healthy women should only delay their periods for a short length of time.

What Is Norethisterone?

Norethisterone delays periods by increasing the amount of progesterone in the body.  Periods start when progesterone levels drop causing the womb lining to shed.  Progestogens like Norethisterone mimic the production of progesterone and maintains the womb lining.  You take one tablet three times a day before your period starts.  Continue taking three tablets a day until you want to have a period.  Bleeding normally starts within three days of stopping taking Norethisterone. Side effects include; bloating, tender breasts, less interest in sex and stomach pains.  You are unlikely to feel these side effects if you take them for a short time.  More serious side effects include; breathing difficulties, wheezing and face swelling. You should stop taking Norethisterone immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.  There is a risk of blood clots if you are overweight, have a family history of clots, recently had surgery and repeated miscarriages.   Some medication interacts negatively with Norethisterone so it is important that you discuss this with your doctor.  A doctor is the only person who can prescribe Norethisterone.  You must inform your doctor of any health conditions you have or medication you are taking.  This ensures that you will not have any adverse effects.
