Mar 11, 2024 Vitamins and Supplements
As well as marking the beginning of Spring, March is also known for Nutrition and Hydration Week from the 11th - 17th of March. This includes the popular Global Tea Party on the 13th of March. We look at what this awareness week is all about, why hydration and nutrition are so important and how you (and we) can help yourself and those around you.
Nutrition & Hydration Week is an annual awareness event in the UK. NHS Trusts and care providers around the UK are invited to take part. It’s hoped that by working together more can be learned about boosting hydration and nutrition through sharing best practices. This is not just a week for medical professionals and caregivers but also one to help educate and support the larger community.
The Global Tea Party is the highlight of Nutrition and Hydration Week and takes place on Wednesday the 13th of March. This is a day where the community is invited to take part by holding tea parties in their organisations. This is a great way to encourage talk about how to boost nutrition and hydration and the benefits. It’s also a good way to bring people together for fun.
While many of the organisations taking part may be from the care or medical sector, this is a week open to all as optimum hydration and nutrition benefits everyone, regardless of age or any other factors. You can find out more about the Global Tea Party on the N&H Week website.
Good nutrition serves as the foundation for a healthy life. The food we consume provides essential nutrients that fuel our bodies, support growth, and maintain overall health. A well-balanced diet plays a crucial role in supporting various bodily functions, including metabolism, immune system function, and tissue repair. Proper nutrition is not just about maintaining a healthy weight. It is about nourishing our bodies with the right mix of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates to keep us functioning properly and feeling well and energised.
Hydration is just as important as nutrition. Our bodies are mostly composed of water, and every cell depends on it to function correctly. This means that water is essential for digestion, nutrient absorption, temperature regulation, and waste elimination. Staying adequately hydrated is crucial for maintaining energy levels, preventing dehydration, and supporting overall physical and mental health.
It’s also important to recognise that everyone’s hydration needs vary, for example, if someone is ill or very physically active they may require additional hydration to meet their needs.
There are many benefits to ensuring you prioritise good hydration and nutrition. These include:
While it is easy to say, “drink more and eat better”, it isn’t always that easy to achieve. There are many reasons why someone might struggle with either.
