We hope this blog post is useful but please do speak to your GP or healthcare provider if your symptoms are causing you concern or if you are unsure if Gina 10 is the right treatment for you.

What is Menopause?

Menopause is considered to be the point in a woman’s life when she no longer menstruates. It is the end of her reproductive years as the ovaries stop producing eggs and she produces lower levels of the hormones progesterone and estrogen. It’s a natural biological process that typically happens between the ages of 45 and 55, although for some it may occur earlier, or a little later.

Women are considered to have reached menopause once they have been without periods for a year. The transition period leading up to menopause is called peri-menopause. While the end of menstruation can be something some look forward to menopause can come with its own symptoms, some of which benefit from being managed by HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and other medications and treatments.

One popular and effective treatment for menopause symptoms is Gina 10.

What is Vaginal Atrophy and What Causes it?

One of the main symptoms of menopause is vaginal atrophy. This is where, due to the declining levels of the hormone oestrogen after menopause, the walls of the vagina can thin. Other symptoms include a lack of vaginal flexibility and elasticity and dryness. Without treatment vaginal atrophy can cause irritation and even pain. It is impossible to predict how you will be affected by menopause because every woman is different and the signs and symptoms (and their severity) vary from person to person.

What is Gina 10 for Menopause Symptoms?

Gina 10 is a film-coated vaginal tablet that contains oestrogen. The tablets come in a preloaded applicator for ease of use. A low dose of oestrogen is delivered directly to the vaginal wall.  Using Gina 10 can help with a number of vaginal atrophy symptoms including vaginal dryness, irritation, discomfort, burning, itching and pain during sexual intercourse. At the time of writing Gina 10 vaginal atrophy treatment is the only effective treatment for these symptoms that is available without a prescription.

At What Age Can You Use Gina 10 for Vaginal Symptoms?

Gina has been specially formulated for the treatment of vaginal dryness and accompanying symptoms due to menopause. It is for women over the age of 50 who have confirmed menopause, having not had a period for over a year. If menopause occurs early it would be wise to talk to your GP before using Gina to ensure it is the best course of action.

Can I use Gina if my Periods Haven’t Completely Stopped?

Gina 10 is only for use for those who have reached menopause and have had no period for over a year. If you are experiencing the symptoms of vaginal atrophy and are younger or still have periods please see your GP or sexual health clinic for advice and support.

Does Gina Contain Oestrogen?

Yes, Gina comes pre-loaded with 10 micrograms of oestrogen which is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the ovaries before menopause. The oestrogen in Gina 10 is delivered directly to the vaginal wall which tackles vaginal dryness.

How Long Does Gina 10 Take to Work?

It is important to remember that everyone is different, however, Gina 10 usually starts to rebalance the PH in the vagina after two weeks have passed. It can take up to 8 weeks for someone to start feeling real relief from the symptoms. It’s important to remember that if you stop using Gina the oestrogen levels will start to drop again which could mean that the symptoms of vaginal atrophy may return.

Are There Possible Side Effects When Using Gina?

With all medications, there is the potential for side effects and Gina 10 vaginal tablets are no different. Women using Gina 10 can experience side effects but not everyone does. When they do, the effects may vary.

Common side effects (approx 1 in 10 Gina users) include headaches, stomach pain, vaginal discomfort, bleeding or discharge.

Less common side effects (approx 1 in 100) include nausea, a fungal infection, high blood pressure, rash, weight increase or hot flushes.

Very rarely (1 in 10,000 women) side effects may include loose bowels, water retention, an allergic reaction, and worsening migraines.

Serious side effects such as vomiting, breathing issues, dizziness, rapid breathing or feeling suddenly unwell and sweating should be treated. Please stop using the medication and seek medical advice straight away.

It’s important to discuss any side effects with your pharmacist or GP and to stop taking Gina if you feel it is making you unwell. As with all prescription and non-prescription medications and treatments a list of potential side effects is given. Make sure you read the patient instructions that come with your medication carefully before use and keep them safe for future reference.

Gina 10 FAQ - In Conclusion

The side effects of menopause can vary from woman to woman. Most would agree that between vaginal dryness and hot flashes, not to mention other menopausal symptoms, it can be overwhelming at times. Menopause is a natural phenomenon but that doesn’t mean that women should grin and bear it.

Gina 10 can help with the uncomfortable and sometimes painful side effects associated with vaginal atrophy. It is only suitable for women who are already menopausal as it includes the hormone oestrogen that declines after menopause.

If you are unsure whether you are menopausal or have menopause symptoms that you are struggling with or that concern you please speak to your healthcare provider.
