Sep 12, 2022 Eczema, Psoriasis and Dermatitis
Eczema can affect anyone at any age. The exact cause of it is unknown and triggers can differ from person to person. One thing that all eczema sufferers have in common is the need for an effective treatment plan, both medically and lifestyle-wise. Eczema is widely understood these days and there is, thankfully, more help and support for those who have it.
Eczema is classified as an inflammatory issue that affects the skin. Symptoms vary in severity but include dry and itchy skin, scaly skin patches, skin infections, red and sore patches and similar. It can be a condition that causes significant discomfort or irritation for some and actual pain for others, particularly if the skin is broken and infected.
While eczema is often considered an ongoing diagnosis many sufferers find ways, through lifestyle changes and medications to manage their condition. Products such as Eucerin Aquaphor Soothing Skin Balm for eczema flare-ups are always useful products to have to hand for those times when symptoms reoccur.
There are different types of eczema or dermatitis to contend with. The National Eczema Society has some good information on this.
It is unclear what the exact cause of eczema is as it is rarely a single occurrence or allergy. Eczema is certainly more common among those suffering from other allergies and conditions such as hayfever or asthma.
While the cause of eczema is often uncertain it can be easier to pinpoint the triggers which may cause or contribute to a flare-up. Triggers are different for everyone but common ones include foods and drinks (particularly eggs, dairy, some nuts, citrus fruit, tomatoes and gluten/wheat). This is not an exhaustive list but is a good place to start when looking to identify food-related triggers. Keeping a diary can be a helpful tool and may help doctors to diagnose and treat your eczema most effectively.
There are other triggers which include environmental factors, things you may come in contact with at work or home, and more. Sometimes a single ingredient change in washing powder can be enough to set off a reaction and a flare-up.
National Eczema Week is aimed at raising awareness of eczema and the impact it can have. It is also a good way to highlight treatments or remedies, triggers, and other ways to avoid or manage a flare-up. Awareness weeks such as this often push for more research into the condition and can also serve as a time for those who deal with it to connect, support each other and share tips and ideas. National Eczema Week is also a good time for those affected by eczema to signpost others to information or services that they have researched and/or tried/experienced themselves.
There are two main parts to living successfully with eczema and minimising the impact it has on many. These include identifying and eliminating possible triggers and having a bespoke treatment regime.
Emolient cream or gel products, for example Doublebase Gel, as well as over-the-counter or prescription steroid creams, such as eumovate, can be effective in easing symptoms and controlling flare ups.
Knowing which emollient product to choose can be difficult so trying something like the Aproderm emollient starter pack can be a good way to see what’s best suited to your individual needs.
If these don’t quite work for you, here at Simply Meds Online we have an extensive range of eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis remedies to choose from. Our pharmacists will be happy to advise you.
The more information you have on what affects you in terms of triggers the better your treatment plan will be.
Eczema is not an easy condition for many and can be painful, time-consuming and long-lasting. If you are struggling please seek help from your GP who can offer both medical advice and refer you to specialists and signpost you toward additional support where required.
Thankfully eczema and related issues are more widely understood these days and as a consequence of this, there is a larger and more effective range of treatments and support options available. We are happy to help you where we can to make your eczema more manageable.
