April is National Pet Month (although devoted pet owners might argue that every month is NPM!). One of the main themes of this awareness campaign is to bring together experts, organisations and pet owners, all of whom want the same thing: happy and healthy pets. With that in mind, now is a good time to share key information about upcoming changes to veg prescription fees and what this means for vets and for your pets.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced a significant overhaul of the veterinary industry following a detailed investigation into rising costs. For years, pet owners have expressed concerns regarding the high price of treatments and a lack of clarity when paying for services.
The CMA investigation found that many consumers were paying more than necessary because they were unaware of their options. These upcoming changes aim to lower costs and ensure that pet owners are treated fairly when seeking medical care for their animals.
The main motivation for these reforms is a lack of transparency within the sector. Currently, some veterinary practices charge £30 or more just to provide a written prescription.
While a high price might usually encourage someone to shop around, in this industry, it often has the opposite effect. High prescription fees act as what is known as a “barrier to entry”. If a vet charges £30 for the paperwork alone, the medication found online must be at least £30 cheaper than the vet's price before an owner even begins to save money. This effectively locks owners into buying directly from the practice to avoid the high cost of the prescription itself.
The CMA also identified that many large veterinary groups do not clearly disclose their ownership of local practices. This can lead to a lack of competition, as consumers may unknowingly be choosing between different branches of the same large corporation rather than independent competitors.
The rollout of these new regulations will happen in stages to allow practices to adjust:
Under the new regulations, the cost of a written prescription will be strictly capped to make pet care more affordable and encourage healthy competition.
From March 2027, the maximum fee for the first medicine on a prescription will be £21. For every additional medicine included on the same prescription, the fee will be capped at £12.50. These prices include VAT. It is important to note that these figures represent the fee for the paperwork only and do not include the actual cost of the medication itself.
Yes, pet owners have the right to request a written prescription and purchase medication from an online pharmacy. While many specialist pet pharmacies exist, some human pharmacies also dispense certain medications that are suitable for animals.
Simply Meds Online provides a private prescription service for human medications. If your vet has prescribed a human drug for your pet, you may be able to fulfil that prescription through our registered online pharmacy, often at a lower cost than buying directly from the vet. The prescription cannot include multiple items that are split across Vet-only medications and human-only medications. The human medicines, prescribed under the Veterinary Cascade, must be on their own prescription for them to be considered.
The Veterinary Cascade is a legal framework that dictates how vets prescribe medicine. Vets must prioritise medications specifically licensed for animals. However, if no suitable veterinary-licensed product exists, the cascade allows them to prescribe a human medication.
This is a safety-led decision-making process. It ensures that pets receive the most effective treatment available, even if the drug was originally developed for humans.
There are several ways to manage the rising costs of pet healthcare:
Human medications should only ever be given to pets under the direct guidance of a qualified veterinarian. You should never self-administer human drugs to an animal.
Animals metabolise drugs differently from humans. A dose that is safe for a person could be toxic or fatal for a dog or cat. Always follow your vet’s specific dosage instructions to ensure your pet’s safety.
It is important to point out that qualified vets spend years learning the best way to treat our beloved pets and other animals. These findings are about streamlining the process and ensuring a consistent and fair method across all UK practices to enable pet owners to access the best and most affordable medicines on a case-by-case basis.
Our FAQ section below offers a breakdown of the most commonly asked questions about the cap.
How much will vet prescriptions cost in the UK? From March 2027, the fee for a written prescription will be capped at £21 for the first item and £12.50 for subsequent items on the same prescription.
Can I buy pet medication online? Yes. You can take a written prescription from your vet and use it to purchase medication from reputable online retailers.
What is the veterinary cascade? It is a system that allows vets to prescribe human medicines for animals when there is no suitable or effective animal-specific medicine available.
Do vets have to give me a prescription? Yes, vets are required to provide a written prescription if requested, though they are currently permitted to charge a fee for this service.
Why are vet medicines so expensive? Costs are often higher due to the lack of price transparency in the industry and the fact that many vets rely on medicine sales to subsidise other clinical services. These new reforms aim to address these pricing imbalances as reported by MoneySavingExpert.
