Period Pain Or Implantation Cramps?

Feb 20, 2018 Period Pain

Period pain or primary dysmenorrhea is one symptom of menstruation.  Other symptoms include low mood, bloating, tender breasts, headaches, changes in appetite and spots.  Pain varies from mild to intense and lasts for a few days.  Cramping is the cause of the pain because the womb is contracting to shed its lining. Menstrual cycles last for approximately 28 days starting from the first day of your last period. A period normally lasts for seven days. If a fertilized egg implants into the lining of the womb there will be no period.  Sometimes implantation feels like a period pain because the fertilized egg burrows into the womb lining. Implantation cramps usually occur up to ten days after ovulation.  You may experience spotting or implantation which is lighter than a regular period. Cramping is milder than period pain and doesn’t last as long. If your period doesn’t arrive when expected a pregnancy test will confirm if it is implantation bleeding.

What Causes Period Pain?

Period pain is underestimated by half of the population of the world.  Studies compare the pain to that of a heart attack.  The menstrual cycle is the womb preparing itself to carry a baby to term. Pregnancy occurs when a fertilised egg implants itself into the womb lining.  If not the lining sheds as menstrual bleeding. Contractions push the lining of the womb out in a similar way to giving birth.  The contractions are also known as cramping and cause periods pain. Periods last approximately seven days and have a variety of symptoms.  As well as pain women experience; bloating, tender breasts, low moods, headaches, increase in appetite and skin changes.   Intense period pain is debilitating and requires medication to treat it.  Over the counter, painkillers are sufficient to quell regular discomfort.  Mefenamic Acid is a non-steroid anti-inflammatory (NSAID) used to treat period pain.  It suppresses the production of prostaglandins which initiate contractions during a period. Conditions such as endometriosis cause intense period pain and require intervention from a doctor.  Uterine cells existing outside the womb cause endometriosis. Pain occurs when the lining sheds into the abdomen.  It lasts longer and is more painful than normal period pain. Exercise, using a hot water bottle, increasing magnesium intake and eating healthily are natural ways to improve period pain.

What Are Implantation Cramps?

Implantation cramps occur when a fertilised egg burrows into the womb lining. The ovaries release an egg once a month.  An egg is fertilized when it meets a healthy sperm in the fallopian tubes. Implantation normally occurs up to ten days after ovulation. Bleeding occurs when the egg attaches itself to the lining of the womb.  Women feel symptoms similar to period pain during this time.  It is perfectly natural for this to happen and medical treatment is not necessary.  It is difficult to distinguish implant bleeding from a normal period.  A pregnancy test three days after your expected period should confirm if you are pregnant. The fertilized egg gains nutrients from the blood vessels in the womb lining through an organ called the placenta.  An umbilical cord transfers nutrients from the placenta to the embryo.  If everything goes well the pregnancy lasts for nine months and results in the birth of a healthy baby. If baby making is your favourite hobby then your period pain is likely to be implantation cramps.  If you would like to review and purchase period pain treatment please click here.
