Looking after our teeth and prioritising our oral hygiene is part of maintaining our overall health. When it comes to putting together a daily (or twice daily) routine to take care of our teeth, it’s important to have the right tools to hand. Not looking after your mouth can lead to gum recession which is part of gum disease.
Here at Simply Meds Online, we offer a wide range of dental products to help you keep smiling and avoid issues.
Gum recession happens when the gum tissue around a tooth wears away. What happens next is that more of the tooth is exposed. This can cause tooth sensitivity and increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Treatment is important to minimise further damage and maintain oral health. A commonly asked question is, “can you lose teeth if you have gum recession?” - The answer is, yes!
When your gums start to move away from your teeth, "pockets" form in between. These pockets make it easy for bacteria to grow. If you don't get help, this can cause your teeth to get weaker and eventually fall out.
Treatments for gum recession may include the use of toothpaste, mouthwashes, and other products that help reduce plaque buildup, or the use of special products such as Tepe brushes, Oraldene, and Corsodyl. Temporary tooth repair kits and products such as CB12 Fresh Breath are also available at Simply Meds Online to promote mouth health care. In cases where more advanced treatment is needed, Colgate Duraphat toothpaste on prescription may be recommended. You can find out more about these products and more below.
Tepe brushes are small, soft toothbrushes designed to clean between teeth and along the gumline. The interdental brushes come in different sizes which correspond to the space between your teeth. Most people start with a very small brush and over time move up to larger sizes.
There are also Tepe brushes with a longer angled handle. You can choose what best suits your needs. Many people find these dental brushes great for getting where normal toothbrushes can’t, clearing away and reducing plaque build-up. Use before brushing in the same way that you would floss.
Corsodyl Fresh Mint Mouthwash is a cooling mouthwash that helps with bleeding, irritated gums and mouth ulcers. It contains Chlorhexidine Digluconate, which is an antibacterial active ingredient that helps avoid dental plaque building up and bad breath.
Corsodyl Mouthwash can be used to:
Prevent and treat gum disease (gingivitis)
Heal after dental surgery or treatment
Keep your mouth clean
Control mouth ulcers
Manage oral thrush and denture sore mouth.
Oraldene is another popular brand of mouthwash and contains Hexetidine. This is antibacterial and antifungal and is used before and after dental surgery and general, regular dental and oral health care.
Corsodyl, Oraldene and similar mouthwashes pack more of a punch in terms of promoting good oral hygiene and health than, for example, a cheaper basic supermarket brand.
Temporary tooth repair kits are products that help people fix their teeth temporarily until they can get to a dentist. They usually contain materials like dental cement that can be used to fill in cavities or fix broken teeth. A good example of this would be Dentemp. The Dentemp Refil-it Kit offers at-home support for temporary fillings and similar.
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be caused by a variety of things, including poor dental hygiene, certain foods, dry mouth, smoking, and medical conditions. A product such as CB12 Fresh Breath (available as a spray and as a rinse) can help neutralise bad breath for longer rather than just masking it as some products do.
If you have persistent bad breath, and not just because you like a lot of garlic, it is a good idea to see a dentist as it may be that you have an infection. You might benefit from additional advice about keeping plaque at bay and your mouth clean and healthy.
Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste gives you better protection against cavities and plaque acids than regular kinds of toothpaste you can buy with your weekly shop. It has about four times more fluoride than the strongest regular toothpaste, so it helps stop the build-up of plaque and decrease the acid which causes decay. Duraphat can also help undo damage to enamel before it gets too bad. If your enamel has already started to erode, Duraphat can help fix the area. This is a prescription-only product.
One of the best ways to avoid gum recession and promote good oral health is to visit your dentist regularly. Not only does a dentist check your teeth but they also look out for other problems, such as the signs of mouth cancer.
We've heard more and more in recent news about there not being enough NHS dentists available in the UK. This information from the NHS tells you how to find an NHS dentist and what to do if you can’t.
Whether you are visiting a dentist or not, building a good dental hygiene routine is a good way to hold back potential problems, including gum recession.
Gum disease and gum recession are not to be dismissed and should be taken seriously. Not taking good care of our oral health will cause problems in the future, or even sooner. We appreciate that finding an NHS dentist might not be easy in your area and hope the information on this above helps a little.
In the meantime, if you are not able to see a dentist, take steps to prioritise good dental hygiene and oral health. This includes regular and thorough cleaning and dealing with issues as they pop up. Not sure if you have tooth decay. Our blog post on tooth decay may help.
Losing your teeth through gum recession is not something any of us want to happen. Here at Simply Meds Online, we have a wide ride of dental health and oral care products available to help you keep your teeth and mouth healthy.
